A little tour of the Moon

After a rainy day in Paris, I didn’t expect to see much of the sky. But, surprisingly, the clouds cleared, and I had a beautiful view of the Moon and the perfect opportunity to try out my PowerSeeker 114EQ telescope and take a few photos.

I thought it was not too bad for a first attempt. It was also a great opportunity to learn a little more about lunar geography and all its craters and mares. The dark areas visible across the surface are the lunar maria, plains of solidified basalt formed by ancient volcanic activity. The name of “mare” (sea) comes from the idea that early astronomers had that they were water bodies, which is definitely not the case (although water does exist in the moon, just not in liquid form).
